Description

Coral Cactus is a fascinating succulent prized for its unique fan-shaped crest and sculptural appearance. Despite its common name, it is not actually a true cactus but a grafted Euphorbia, combining the hardy rootstock of one species with the crested top of another. Its ruffled, coral-like crest displays beautiful shades of green accented by silvery tones, often highlighted with purple or pink edges under bright light. Unusual, drought tolerant, and highly ornamental, Coral Cactus brings a striking architectural presence to windowsills, succulent gardens, desktops, and indoor plant collections.

Key Features:

  • Unique crested growth – fan-shaped, ruffled crest resembles ocean coral, making each plant one of a kind.
  • Beautiful coloration – green foliage often develops silvery tones with purple or pink edging under bright light.
  • Drought tolerant – stores water within its succulent tissues, making it an excellent low-maintenance houseplant.
  • Conversation piece – its unusual grafted form makes it a standout addition to any succulent or tropical collection.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light with several hours of gentle morning sun if possible. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but prolonged harsh afternoon sun may scorch the crest.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems and can quickly lead to root rot.
  • Humidity: Thrives in average to low humidity and does not require additional moisture. Good airflow helps maintain a healthy plant.
  • Soil & Potting: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer once or twice during spring and summer while actively growing. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage weak growth.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm indoor conditions around 65–85°F (18–29°C); protect from frost and temperatures below 50°F.

Growth & Size:

Slow-growing; typically reaches around 8–16 inches tall with a spread of about 6–12 inches, depending on growing conditions and container size. The crested top gradually expands over time, developing increasingly intricate folds and waves that make every specimen unique.

Safety Note:

Coral Cactus is considered toxic to pets and humans if ingested and should be kept out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children. Like other Euphorbia species, it produces a milky white latex sap that can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, and digestive upset if consumed. Always wear gloves when pruning or repotting, and avoid contact with the sap.
