Description

Philodendron ‘Birkin’ is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its distinctive pinstriped foliage and compact, upright growth habit. Its glossy, oval-shaped leaves feature rich green coloration accented by fine creamy white to pale yellow stripes that create a beautiful contrast. New leaves often emerge with more pronounced variegation, while older foliage may develop deeper green tones as it matures. The amount of striping can vary from leaf to leaf, giving each plant its own unique appearance. Compact, easy to grow, and highly ornamental, Philodendron ‘Birkin’ brings modern tropical character to shelves, desktops, plant stands, offices, and indoor plant collections.

QUICK FACTS

Botanical name: Philodendron ‘Birkin’
Common name: Birkin Philodendron, White Wave Philodendron
Pot size: Varies by selection
Growth habit: Compact, upright, self-heading tropical plant
Light: Bright indirect light
Water: Water when the upper portion of the potting mix begins to dry
Care level: Easy to moderate
Pet safety: Toxic to cats and dogs

CARE

Light: Provide bright, indirect light to maintain healthy growth and attractive white pinstriping. Medium indirect light is also suitable, although growth may slow and new foliage may develop less pronounced variegation. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water: Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of the potting mix begin to dry, then allow excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the roots constantly saturated, as overly wet conditions can lead to root rot. Do not allow the entire root ball to remain completely dry for extended periods.

Humidity: Average to moderately humid household conditions are suitable. Higher humidity can encourage healthy leaf development and help prevent dry, crispy edges. Good airflow around the foliage is also beneficial.

Soil: Use a loose, well-draining aroid mix that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely. Orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and quality potting media work well for maintaining healthy roots and proper aeration.

Temperature: Prefers warm conditions around 65–85°F. Protect from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 55°F.

Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer during periods of active growth. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can lead to fertilizer salt buildup and damage the roots.

GROWTH & HABIT

Philodendron ‘Birkin’ is a slow to moderate-growing tropical plant that typically reaches around 1–3 feet tall with a similar spread indoors, depending on growing conditions and container size. Unlike climbing Philodendrons, ‘Birkin’ develops a compact, self-heading growth habit with new leaves emerging from the central growing point. Its upright foliage gradually forms a dense, rounded display without requiring a moss pole or trellis. The distinctive white pinstriping can vary between leaves, and occasional green or reddish leaves may appear due to the cultivar's natural instability. Its manageable size makes it especially attractive for tabletops, plant stands, and smaller indoor spaces.

PET SAFETY

Pet Safety: Toxic to cats and dogs. Philodendron ‘Birkin’ contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, swelling, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if chewed or ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and small children.
